Burr Ridge started life on October 30, 1956 as the Village of Harvester — about 75 homes and 300 residents named for the International Harvester experimental farm nearby, where the company had tested the world’s first all-purpose tractor, the Farmall, on 414 acres it bought back in 1917. When the young village annexed that farm site in 1961, International Harvester objected — the company didn’t want the village mistaken for a company town — so in 1962 the village renamed itself Burr Ridge, after a ridge of bur oak trees near County Line and Plainfield roads. The old farm eventually became today’s Harvester Park, complete with a Route 66-themed playground nodding to the historic highway that once ran along the village’s edge.

That short, specific history explains why Burr Ridge’s housing spans more decades than its founding year suggests: the 1947 Hinsdale Countryside Estates predate the village entirely, 1971 brought Carriage Way and Braemoor, and newer gated subdivisions have kept adding estate-scale homes ever since.
