A Village Built Around One Club

Golf exists because of a golf course. As the well-told local story goes, Albert Earling — president of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad and a member of the Glen View Club, founded in 1897 with names like Daniel Burnham and William Holabird on its rolls — began having his private rail car switched onto a siding near the clubhouse around 1899, telling colleagues he was simply “going to golf.” Other members followed, the informal stop became the “Golf” station, and the name stuck to the community that Diederich’s 1925 subdivision turned into a village three years later. The club itself hosted the U.S. Amateur in 1902 and the U.S. Open in 1904, its course reworked over the years by architects from Donald Ross to William Flynn — and in the 1970s it was annexed into the village’s own borders, so the club that gave Golf its name now sits inside the village it created. Diederich Park, named for the founding developer, still anchors the community’s four acres of shared green.

A century on, Golf remains one of the smallest incorporated villages in the Chicago area — those 514 residents share roughly 140 homes — and nearly all of that housing is large, single-family, and held by owners who stay.
