A Village Built Around Two Kinds of Homes

Most Chicago-area towns grew up around a downtown; Lake Barrington never did. The area’s story starts with the Flint family, who homesteaded along the creek that now bears their name in 1834, and with a 1925 dam that turned a stretch of marshland into the 90-acre Indian Lake. Developer Robert Bartlett bought some 600 surrounding acres in 1946 — at about $500 an acre — and renamed the water Lake Barrington. When county-approved plans threatened denser half-acre subdivisions, residents incorporated the village in 1959 to control their own zoning and keep the estate character, a choice the village still celebrates in its own tagline: an “Oasis of Gracious Countryside Living.” Today that shows in village-owned spaces like the 24-acre Freier Farm and in the restored Flint Creek Savanna nearby, where sandhill cranes have nested every year since 1998.

Then came the second Lake Barrington. After Bartlett’s death, his land was sold in 1972, and construction of Lake Barrington Shores began in 1973 — a gated, resort-style community wrapped around the lake that grew past 1,300 condominium and townhome units by 1990. That single development now accounts for more than half of the village’s roughly 2,400 housing units: an unusual mix for a village this size, with spacious estate homes on one side and clustered lake-view condos on the other.
