A Camp-Meeting Resort’s Streets, Still Shaping Homes Today

Lake Bluff didn’t start out as a suburb. In 1875, Methodist ministers led by Solomon Thatcher bought 100 acres of lakefront land from the family of the area’s first settlers, renamed the little settlement from Rockland to Lake Bluff, and built a summer camp-meeting resort — cottage lots 25 feet wide on which a cottage could go up within 20 days for $250, a tabernacle seating more than 2,000, and over 30 hotels and boarding houses by the mid-1880s. An 1883 artesian well even created the 10-acre Artesian Lake that still sits at the village center. The resort era ended when Hotel Irving burned in 1897 and the Association held its final program a year later — but the village had already incorporated in 1895, and the tight grid the ministers platted never went away.

Everything since has filled in around that original grid in distinct, dated waves — Ravine Forest in 1923, the Terrace neighborhoods through the 1950s and 60s, Tangley Oaks, Armour Woods, and Belle Foret in the 1970s and 80s — while the uptown blocks earned National Register protection in 2006. Add the traditions that keep the village its own place, from the Fourth of July parade famous for its synchronized-lawnmower drill team to Crab Tree Farm just north of town, which the local history museum calls the only operating farm in Illinois sitting on Lake Michigan, and you get a community where no two blocks need quite the same HVAC approach.
