The first subdivision was platted in 1924 as a vacation-cottage colony on Lily Lake, and its part-time residents incorporated the Village of Lily Lake in 1938 — only to vote it out of existence five years later in a tax dispute. Residents tried again and, after a close election, incorporated the Village of Lakemoor in June 1952. For decades it stayed exactly what it had always been: a small lakeside community, home to just 723 people as late as 1980. Then everything changed at once — the population more than quadrupled between 1990 and 2010, with subdivisions like Rockwell Place bringing hundreds of new single-family homes and townhomes to the fields north of Route 120.

The commercial corridor grew just as fast. The village created a TIF district at the Route 12/120 crossroads in 2015, and by 2019 the 74-acre, Woodman’s-anchored Lakemoor Commons had opened on former farmland — a 244,000-square-foot, 24-hour anchor store that local reporting credits with pushing the village’s sales-tax revenue from about $1.5 million in 2022 toward a projected $2.4 million by 2024. For comfort at home, the takeaway is simpler: most of Lakemoor’s housing is young and hitting its 15-to-25-year equipment window together, while the cottage-era core by the lake plays by different rules entirely.
