Lemont’s identity starts with stone. When crews cutting the Illinois & Michigan Canal through the village in the 1830s–40s hit a hard, fine-grained dolomite limestone, they’d found what became known as “Athens marble” — named for the town’s earlier identity as the Town of Athens — and for the next half-century Lemont quarries shipped that stone out to build landmarks including the Chicago Water Tower, one of the few structures to survive the Great Fire of 1871. The limestone and frame buildings that industry left behind, set on the bluff above the Des Plaines River, now make up the Lemont Downtown Historic District, added to the National Register in 2016. For roughly 50 years starting in the 1850s, canal crews and quarrymen cut “Athens marble” out of the ground and shipped it along the Illinois & Michigan Canal to build landmarks including the Chicago Water Tower and Holy Name Cathedral. The buildings that industry left on the bluff — some 53 of them now protected as the Lemont Downtown Historic District, beneath the “seven steeples” raised by the immigrant quarry and canal workers who earned Lemont its Village of Faith nickname — are often 100-plus years old, with thick masonry walls, low clearances, and little or no space for traditional ductwork. These are homes where a compact ductless system or a rebuilt boiler is the right call, not a one-size-fits-all furnace swap. Even the quarry pits themselves found a second life: they’re now the Heritage Quarries Recreation Area and The Forge adventure park, with ziplines running over the flooded stone.

A few blocks and a few decades away, it’s a different picture. Since the 1990s boom that built out neighborhoods like Woodland Estates, The Steeples, and Ruffled Feathers, Lemont has added most of its housing on the uplands beyond the bluff — the village’s median home dates to around 1995, with real building continuing into the 2000s and 2010s. Those homes have full ductwork and forced-air systems, but the ones from that first big wave are now 25–30 years old, right in the window where an original furnace or AC condenser is due for a serious look.
