Lincolnwood Was Built by a Highway — and Is Being Rebuilt at Lincoln and Touhy

Lincolnwood’s history reads like two very different construction booms. The village incorporated in 1911 as Tessville, a 359-resident outpost named for German immigrant Johann Tess that, during Prohibition, became known for its speakeasies. Under Henry Proesel — mayor for a remarkable 46 years — it was renamed Lincolnwood in 1936, for Lincoln Avenue and the roughly 10,000 elm trees planted along village streets by Depression-era WPA crews. But it was a highway, not the new name, that truly built the village we know today: when the Edens Expressway opened in 1951, Lincolnwood’s population raced from about 3,072 to nearly 13,000 by 1970, and builders lined the corridor with the ranches, split-levels, and Cape Cods that still make up roughly six in ten of the village’s homes.

That same corner of the village is being rebuilt again right now. The old Purple Hotel at Lincoln and Touhy — a landmark demolished in 2013 — is now District 1860, a roughly $150–175 million redevelopment bringing an Amazon Fresh grocery store, restaurants, 299 apartments, and a Marriott hotel to the 8.25-acre site.
