A Riverfront Landmark and Two Route 66 Alignments — Lyons’ Century on the Des Plaines

Few villages this size can point to a National Register-listed tower on their own riverfront skyline. In 1908, brewer George Hofmann Jr. built the eight-story Hofmann Tower — its design reportedly inspired by a bridge tower he’d seen in Germany, complete with four corner turrets, and reputedly the first electrically lit building in Lyons — as the centerpiece of a riverside park where families picnicked and rented boats beside the dam he’d acquired the year before. The tower has stood on the Des Plaines ever since, a village landmark since 1972 and on the National Register since 1978. It wasn’t even the family’s first riverside venture: the Hofmanns’ Chateau Des Plaines tavern and picnic grounds had welcomed Ogden Avenue travelers since the 1860s, and in 1944 the old property found new life as Mangam’s Chateau, a nightclub that packed in crowds through the 1950s and ’60s. And in a rare double for a village this size, Lyons also hosts the Chicago Portage National Historic Site on Harlem Avenue — the crossing Marquette and Joliet used in 1673.

That same Ogden corridor carried real regional traffic once the automobile arrived: paved in 1914 and named for Chicago’s first mayor, it joined U.S. Route 66 in 1926 and carried two different alignments of the Mother Road through Lyons over the decades. It’s the kind of layered history — a landmark tower, a historic highway, a river through the middle of it all — that shaped the bungalows and two-flats built up around it, homes we still service today alongside the ranches and split-levels of the village’s mid-century wave.
