Monee’s name honors Marie LeFevre Bailly, wife of French-Canadian fur trader Joseph Bailly — “Monee” being how “Marie” sounded in the Odawa language, which has no “r.” The 1833 Treaty of Chicago set aside 1,280 acres near here for “the five daughters of Mo-nee,” and when the Illinois Central platted its new station in 1853, it took her name — even though, as the village’s own history cheerfully admits, she never lived here. The railroad shaped everything that followed: Monee’s depot sat at the highest point of elevation on the entire line between Chicago and Carbondale, and the grade bottlenecked steam-era traffic so badly that in 1922-23 the railroad dug a trench roughly 25 feet deep and 80 feet wide straight through town. Locals still call it the Cut, and it still runs through the historic downtown today.

Regional planning data shows nearly 88% of Monee’s housing was built between 1990 and 2009 — one of the most concentrated single-era housing stocks in the south suburbs, with a median construction year of 2003 — as the population jumped more than 76% in the 2000s and then leveled off.
