The Village Named for Its Country Club

Olympia Fields is one of the only Chicago-area suburbs literally built around, and named for, its golf club. Investors led by Charles Beach broke ground in 1913, and Olympia Fields Country Club was chartered in 1915 with Amos Alonzo Stagg — the legendary University of Chicago football coach — as its first president; the club’s main dining room still carries his name. Stagg proposed “Olympia” for the ancient Greek games, “Fields” described the pastoral terrain, and by the early 1920s the club had grown to four 18-hole courses — billed by Golf Digest as the world’s largest country club of its day and the country’s first 72-hole private golf facility. Its Tudor Revival clubhouse, designed by George C. Nimmons with an 80-foot clock tower, is on the National Register of Historic Places. When Beach organized the surrounding neighborhoods into a village in 1927, he became its first president too — and built his own home to match the club’s Tudor style. Nearly a century on, the club still hosts championship golf on national television, from the 1928 and 2003 U.S. Opens to the 2020 and 2023 BMW Championships.

That country-club pedigree shows up directly in the housing. Graymoor and Arcadia were built across four decades, from the late 1950s into the late 1990s, and run considerably larger than the Chicago-area norm — some Graymoor properties top 6,600 square feet.
