Install Trane Water Source Heat Pump – South Loop, Chicago, IL

Earlier this month, our team successfully installed six new Trane water source heat pumps in a downtown Chicago high-rise condominium building. This type of HVAC install requires careful coordination and technical precision.

The process starts by confirming proper unit sizing, electrical requirements, and compatibility with the building’s condenser water loop system. Many downtown towers rely on shared hydronic loops, so technicians coordinate with building management before beginning work. They shut down and isolate the system to avoid disrupting neighboring units. Next, they disconnect the existing heat pump from the supply and return water lines, condensate drain, thermostat wiring, and electrical connections. Tight mechanical closets and ceiling cavities demand careful planning and safe material handling.  But at times, as in the case of this installation, the units can be installed directly in the wall of the condo.

After removing the old equipment, the team positions and secures the new unit with proper vibration isolation to reduce operational noise. They reconnect the water lines using approved fittings and pressure-test all joints to confirm a leak-free seal. The installer will also inspect the condensate drain to ensure proper drainage and prevent water damage.

Once installation is complete, the technician starts the system and tests its performance. They verify water flow rate, check water temperatures, test refrigerant pressures, and confirm proper amperage draw. In addition, they adjust airflow for balanced performance and program the thermostat for optimal comfort and efficiency.
