Replace Old Nordyne Furnace
Service Pro Titans responded to a Nordyne furnace HVAC service call in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood this week that turned into an Ameristar furnace replacement estimate. Read on to see the details of the service visit.
Dispatch
Service Pro Titans recently responded to a no-heat service call for a Nordyne gas furnace. The owner reported that the heating system had stopped working completely. As a result, the property had no heat when our technician arrived.
HVAC Diagnosis
First, the technician restored power to the furnace to observe how the system reacted. Immediately, the furnace began operating abnormally. The draft inducer motor relay clicked on and off repeatedly. At the same time, the blower motor ran out of sequence with the normal heating cycle. Because these symptoms often indicate a control problem, the technician focused on the furnace electronics.
Next, the technician inspected the furnace control board and related wiring. The control board manages the order of operation for the entire heating system. It directs the inducer motor, ignition system, gas valve, and blower motor. During the inspection, the technician also noticed that the existing control board was not the original factory board. A technician from another HVAC company had installed this board earlier this past winter.
However, before recommending another replacement board, the technician performed a detailed wiring inspection. Loose or weak electrical connections can create relay chatter and irregular furnace operation. Therefore, the technician tightened all electrical terminals and remade several spade connections. These steps ensured strong electrical contact throughout the system.
After completing these adjustments, the technician restarted the furnace. This time, the relay clicking immediately stopped. The inducer motor started normally, and the ignition sequence followed correctly. Soon after, the burners ignited and the furnace began producing heat.
To confirm the repair, the technician cycled the system through the thermostat again. The furnace completed the entire heating sequence without errors. In addition, the system continued operating normally during the test period.
Repair vs. Replace
Even though the furnace now runs, the technician discussed several concerns with the owner. First, the furnace is significantly oversized for the property. As you can see from the photos the technician took, the unit is also well beyond the typical life expectancy for a gas furnace.
Because of the furnace’s age and repair history, additional heating issues could occur soon. For that reason, Service Pro Titans recommended replacing the furnace as soon as possible. A new Ameristar high-efficiency furnace would provide dependable heating, improved energy efficiency, and better long-term reliability. The owner opted to save themselves a hassle in the future by replacing the furnace this week with a new, properly sized Ameristar furnace.
