Richmond’s story starts in 1837, when carpenter William McConnell built a log cabin on land that became Richmond Township; the village was platted in 1844 and — as local history tells it — named for Richmond, Vermont, by Isaac Reed, who won the honor by climbing highest at the raising of a new mill. By the mid-1840s the settlement had two mills, a blacksmith, and the county’s first cheese factory, and it incorporated in 1872. Then a Christmas Eve fire in 1902 destroyed twenty downtown commercial buildings, and by the village’s own account the loss limited later commercial rebuilding — leaving the residential blocks around downtown remarkably intact. Homes of that age were built for wood, coal, or boiler heat, and many were never fitted with ductwork at all — exactly where a ductless mini-split earns its keep.

The other half of Richmond is much newer: the village grew 71.8% between 2000 and 2010, its fastest stretch on record, so a large share of local furnaces and air conditioners went in around the same time and are now reaching replacement age together. The Village of Yesteryear, Built Before Central Air

Richmond calls itself “the Village of Yesteryear,” and it earns the name honestly. This was a genuine 19th-century crossroads — two rail lines crossed the township in the 1850s, with the first train crossing the Nippersink on November 26, 1855 — and when the 1902 Christmas Eve fire took out twenty commercial buildings, Richmond never rebuilt a big commercial core. The residential blocks survived instead, and today the village maintains a locally designated Historic Overlay District of more than 20 homes spanning Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, and Bungalow styles, including two individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Memorial Hall and the Lucien Bonaparte Covell House. Main Street — which doubles as US Route 12 — is now known for its antique shops rather than department stores, which is exactly how the village likes it.

A district like that comes with real HVAC considerations. Homes 100 to 150 years old were built for wood or coal heat, not central air — many still run on a boiler, quite a few have no ductwork at all, and equipment placement has to be planned around a historic home’s footprint rather than forced onto it. That’s a different job from servicing the houses added during Richmond’s 2000s boom, where furnaces and AC systems installed in the same few years are now aging out together.
