From America’s First Tower Silo to a One-Acre-Lot Boom Town

Few Chicagoland towns can claim a genuine agricultural first, but Spring Grove can. In 1873, local farmer Fred Hatch built the first vertical tower silo in North America right here — a design that kept silage dry and unfrozen through winter, boosted milk production, and proved such a milestone that a refined steel version was exhibited at Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair. It fits a village first named “English Prairie” by its 1830s settlers, whose creek carries a name evolved from the Potawatomi “Neversink” — place of small waters — and whose early downtown ran on banks, general stores, livery stables, and the Wieland Dairy, which opened in 1904 and eventually became part of Borden. Even the village’s Horse Fair Park keeps that heritage alive: founded by local families and the 4-H club in 1964, donated to the village in 1977, and still hosting horse shows every summer.

The farm-town chapter gave way to a very different one. When Intermatic — founded in Chicago in 1891 as the International Register Company, and still headquartered in Spring Grove today — relocated its production plant here around 1960, farmland began turning into subdivisions on generous one-acre lots, and the population grew nearly tenfold in twenty years.
