Steger got its start as a company town with a twist. John V. Steger — who emigrated from Germany in 1871 and founded his piano company in 1879 — built his factory here rather than in Chicago, and by 1904 it covered 23 acres along the Chicago & Eastern Illinois tracks with a stated capacity of 16,000 pianos a year.
