Much of Summit’s housing traces back to one piece of local history: in 1907, Corn Products Corp. broke ground on what became one of the largest corn wet-milling plants in the world along Archer Avenue, and the “Argo” neighborhood grew up around it as a company town, annexed by Summit in 1911. The plant’s hiring boom drove the village’s population up more than 300% in a single decade — 949 residents in 1910 to 4,019 by 1920 — leaving a legacy of modest bungalows, Cape Cods, and craftsman homes built for corn-plant families, many now a century old and never built with central ductwork. A Village Named for the Divide Between Two Watersheds — Built by the World’s Corn Capital

Few towns can point to their own name on a map of North American geography, but Summit can. In continuous use since 1836, the name marks the village’s position at the highest point of the Chicago Portage — the low ridge where water begins flowing either northeast toward the Chicago River and the Great Lakes, or southwest toward the Des Plaines, the Illinois, and eventually the Mississippi and the Gulf. It’s the same divide Marquette and Joliet crossed in 1673, preserved today at the Chicago Portage National Historic Site just over the village line — the one place where explorers, and Native travelers long before them, could step between two of the continent’s great watersheds.

What actually built modern Summit, though, was corn. The plant Corn Products broke ground on in 1907 ranked by 1960 as the largest corn wet-milling operation in the world — and it remains Ingredion’s largest facility today, with Argo corn starch, Karo syrup, and Mazola oil all tracing their lineage to this stretch of Archer Avenue. The company town subdivided as “Argo” and annexed in 1911 drew workers so fast that Summit quadrupled in a decade, and that history is still visible everywhere: in the Argo name carried forward by Argo Community High School, in the neighborhood’s own 63rd Street business strip across the rail tracks, and in the modest bungalows, Cape Cods, and craftsman homes built for those plant families — houses that, a century later, are exactly the kind of building stock that benefits most from a ductless retrofit or a well-timed boiler tune-up.
