Elihu Hubbard built the area’s first log cabin on the bank of Bangs Lake in 1836, and Justus Bangs — the settler the lake was later named for — arrived soon after; the town organized by a Lake County vote in 1849 and the village formally incorporated in 1877. By the early 1900s Wauconda was a popular resort town, with a railroad carrying Chicago day-trippers to the Bangs Lake beaches until 1920.
