Wayne exists because of a horse farm. Mark Wentworth Dunham founded Oaklawn Farm here in 1866 — on land his father Solomon had settled back in 1835 — and built it into what’s described as the largest Percheron importing and breeding operation in the world, earning Dunham the title “Father of the Percheron in North America.” The farm’s fame ran so deep that during the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, a special excursion train carried fairgoers from Chicago to Wayne just to see the horses. Dunham’s turreted stone castle, built between 1878 and 1882 in the style of a Norman keep, still stands as a private residence inside the Oaklawn Farm Historic District — and the village’s horse-loving streak even extended to its residents: Marguerite Henry, author of a shelf of beloved children’s horse books, lived here for years.

That identity never faded. The Dunham Woods Riding Club, founded in 1934 on the old estate grounds, is still an active club today, and county horse-keeping minimums — two acres in DuPage, four in Kane — keep Wayne’s properties large and its skyline low.
